DonorsChoose - Share the Love!

DonorsChoose.org is an amazing nonprofit organization that helps teachers find funding for their classroom needs. Teachers post project requests online, donors choose the projects they want to fund, and materials are shipped directly to the teacher. How awesome is that?!

During my teaching career, I received thousands of dollars of funding to help me purchase materials for my classroom. That's why I love supporting other teachers by donating to their classroom projects. I even set up a DonorsChoose webpage on my site and hosted a free webinar on this topic! Can you tell I love DC?

Now I'd like to invite you to help me share the love! This week is Friends and Family Week at DonorsChoose which means that every donation made using the matching code HEART will be matched by DC! I love the fact that they picked the week of Valentine's Day for this initiative.

If you have a DonorsChoose project that needs funding, I invite you to link it up to this blog post to showcase it for others to see. Each day of this week, Monday through Friday, I'll choose one of the projects in the Link Up and contribute $50 towards the funding. When I use the matching code, that amount will double to $100! I'll announce each day's recipient on my Teaching Resources Facebook page so be sure to like my page and check in each day to see if your project received funding. Also, there are so many projects linked to this blog post that I'll need your help deciding which ones to fund. Be ready to give me your best sales pitch on Facebook about why I should pick YOURS!

If you do have a DonorsChoose project, I recommend sending home a letter or email this week to invite your parents to donate. Feel free to use  the letter shown here that I've created for this purpose. You can download the letter from my DonorsChoose page and customize it with your own project details and information. Don't forget to add the matching code HEART!

If you don't have a DonorsChoose project, or if you are not a classroom teacher, why not share some love this Valentine's Day by donating to one of the projects below? It's a tax-deductible donation, and you'll be sure to bring joy to a classroom full of students!

Directions for the Link Up: Click the Add Your Link button below. Copy and paste the URL to your project into the URL field. For the Name field, write the name of the project, not your name. Check my Facebook page each day to see if your project received funding.

  1. #41. Literacy and Math Stations: Let's Learn with Fun!
This proposal is near and dear to my heart. Research has proven that young children learn best with hands on activities in multiple levels. Kindergarten students learn through the use of literacy and math stations on a daily basis. I really want to provide more opportunities to my students and this proposal will help me do just that! Please help me to help my little ones learn and be prepared for first grade!

  2. #6 My classroom is a self contained, deaf and hard of hearing classroom in central Florida. I have 8 students, all of which are reading below grade level to varying degrees. My students use ASL and English but of my 8 families 2 are fluently signing with their children making my classroom the only place many of them are accessing language. This is my second year of the teaching, and my first in Florida where my closest family members are over 1,000 miles away. Moving to a new state and tryin to set up a classroom with limited resources has been extremely tough. I have been having to prioritize the supplies I need to buy based on my finances, accessibility, and degree of need.
Books are some of the most expensive supplies on my list and being a new teacher one of the items that I have been scouring the school for whenever I see people leaving freebies in the lounge. The problem is that most of these books are not at the appropriate reading level for my students. Many are picture books with great artwork and storylines but my students simply are unable to read them independently. My school has incorporated common core for first grade which means that 50% of their reading needs to be nonfiction. This is not happening in my classroom because I do not have the supplies they need. PLEASE help me bring language to my students!!! They LOVE to read and their behaviors throughout the day change when they are allowed some down time in the morning to sit and enjoy a book!

  3. My project is #22 lights, camera, action! With the code I will need around $130 to finish my project of $256 left. I am a 3rd year teacher with amazing ideas of how to incorporate these cameras into my classroom. History projects... Reading projects.... The possibilities are endless. I teach in a title 1 school and many of my kids will never have the opportunity to use such equipment. I want to empower my students and make learning come alive for them!!!!!

Please consider funding the rest of my project. $130 is all I need!!!! :). -Courtney Long

  5. Hello! My project is #18, iPad Equals Endless Learning Possibilities. Being at a charter school, technology is limited. The only working computer in our classroom is my teacher laptop. My second graders would greatly benefit from an iPad as they need extra support in reading and basic math facts.

My students are super excited to have an iPad and are trying so hard to earn the money. They are receipt maniacs, bringing in a lot of receipts so we can enter them in Endorse. This is the majority of the funding we have received thus far. My kiddos would be over the moon to hear that we are a step closer to reaching our goal of getting our iPad funded. With just $301 to go, we just need $150 to go!

Please consider helping funding our project and making my kiddos day!

  6. Hi Laura, I hope you will take a look at my project # 93 We need books. We need books for our listening center (my first project on donors choose). I have been following you for years and love all of your lessons and activities. I was part of the empowering readers group and actually helped edit a chapter in your book. My project is close to expiring so any help would be much appreciated by me and my students. Thank you for all the support and help that you give teachers and students.

  7. SENDING OUT AN SOS! We need our personal space! Our out dated listening center requires my scholars to sit in a small confined area, with cords and wires that always seem to be in the way. Please help us update our system and help support our project #98 Listening Center For The 21st Century.

My scholars are incredible individuals who come in my door with a smile on their face and the desire to learn everything they can get their hands on. However, a variety of learning challenges makes that not always easy for my scholars to do so independently. This listening center will help them read books that give them access to grade level content. It will also help expand their comprehension while we work on increasing their reading skills.

I just have one question to ask, " Will you be Mine?"

  8. #103 My project needs a kickstart. I am trying my best to engage and inspire 77 fifth grader scientist. With the new curriculum that NC has I am in dire need for new materials. These students are required to complete a standardized EOG in Science at the end of the year. What better way to prepare than hands on activities to compliment my instruction and their research?
